Panama City Beach -- Fishermen and sightseers taking in the view from the Bay County Pier got quite a show, Thursday, when a basking shark made an appearance.

Panama City Beach -- Fishermen and sightseers taking in the view from the Bay County Pier got quite a show, Thursday, when a basking shark made an appearance.

The basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is the second largest shark in the word, behind only the whale shark. They are not dangerous (unless you are plankton) and cruise the warm waters of the world, where they are often observed on the surface as the slow moving filter feeder takes in a meal.

The largest measured specimen caught measure over 40-feet in length, and weighed an estimated 17 tons.

When my great grandfather came to the USA from Germany, he changed his last name to Palmer but from what? No one seems to know! So we are on the hunt and we will be adding more info as it comes to light. Thus far, here's what we know:

April 14, 1991 Letter from Uncle Gene to his niece, Cathy Palmer:

Info regarding your ancestors. Your great great grandparents were farmers. They owned farms near the small towns of Eckerty, Birdseye, and Evansville in the southern part of Indiana. Your great great grandfather was a St. Clair and great great grandmother was a McMahan. Now when each of their spouse died, they met and married and their first offspring was your grandmother born Dec 25, 1875, who met and married Max Palmer, born 1868 in Louisville, KY.

Max was a railroad engineer for the Southern Railroad and for years they lived in the resort town of French Lick Springs and New Albany, Indiana. Later they moved to Louisville, KY, where Max ran the passenger train to St. Louis, MO. Edna and Max had five kids: Gordon, Willard, Bob, Darwin, and Gene. Edna and Max met by waving to each other. She was a young farm girl and he was a dashing young railroad engineer driving his passenger train by her farm. She waited each day for him so they could wave to each other. Then one day, he stopped and picked her up and that's how it all started. Five kids later, they split fighting over money.

Max Palmer's father came from Baden-Baden, Germany, approx 1860. His father was the burgermiester of Baden-Baden. He served in the union army as an adjuntant general. He knew six languages and translated orders for the various commands. After the war he published a German newspaper in New Albany, Indiana. He married a German girl and had three sons: Hans, Max and Otto. Hans and Otto were merchants in New Albany, Indiana.

November 3, 1929 - July 1, 2004

Little Will, as we called him, was my cousin, the son of my father's brother. He was the only male cousin of the 5 Palmer brothers and we had lost touch with all our Palmer cousins until a few days ago when we connected with Willard's son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Teresa.

Then we were able to connect with Willard's sister, Marlene Palmer Burke, who we had not talked to since the 1950's. How wonderful to reconnect after all these years! Now we hope to meet up this summer in Burbank when I come out for the Centennial in July.

Kayak Fishing the Florida Panhandle: With Linda Cavitt and Sunjammers Watersports!

The redfish bite has been hot been hot in Panama City. I’ve heard several old salts comment about the plentiful schools of redfish in the bays. The bite is still peak around your high and low tidal flows but with temperatures cooling down I feel the bite is extended throughout the day. Topwater action is still best early morning and dusk but we are catching topwater fish all day long. If you go from aggressive blow ups to a short strike or miss then I would switch to just below surface to a non-weighted weedless due to all the suspended grass in the bay. Gold spoons, ss minnows and mirrodines are catching fish as well. Be sure and check for fish along the docks when headed out to your favorite flat. Tyndall Bridge has a ton of redfish around it as well. Flounder can be caught at caught shell island and also mangrove snapper around the jetties.

The king bite has been slow but is starting to pick up. Be on the lookout for frenzied baitpods as there could be a sailfish underneath ready to eat also mahi as well. For kings , head out past the length of the piers and troll fresh or frozen cigar minnows. To troll with plugs try the bomber longA and a stretch 25 and you will be covering two depth ranges. One color should be pink and I’m not just saying that because I’m a girl but that is a color the kings and redfish can’t resist. A kayaker from GA caught a 32 lb king from his kayak on a pink bomber this week. There have been reports of plenty of small Spanish in the mornings and evenings as well. A tarpon was caught from a kayaker as well this week, first time kayaker in a rented kayak from Sunjammers and hooks up a tarpon first 15 min in the water.

So get out there and catch a fish cause the weather just doesn't get anymore beautiful then this.

Panama City Beach, Fla: It’s an unusual site off Panama City Beach that has residents on the lookout for manatees. Two kayakers spotted a group of six manatees Wednesday, and posted this video on youtube.com. Wildlife officials say the animals’ presence may be more common than many think.

“We look and we see this pod of something dark…and we look a little closer and realize it’s manatees,” said kayaker Linda Cavitt, “I’m on the water a lot and I’ve only seen them twice in the Gulf like that so it was really an amazing experience just to be out there with them in the water.”

Stan Kirkland with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission snapped a picture of manatees more than a year ago in North Bay. He says the area is part of their normal migration pattern.

“They come up every year, they feed on vegetation and then they go back,” he said, “For me it’s exciting because it’s just not an animal that we get to see very often, it’s on the endangered species list.”

Kirkland does have advice for anyone lucky enough to get a glimpse of the elusive manatee.

“We don’t encourage people to go swimming, put their hands on them, try to feed them or anything like that,” he said, “Give them plenty of space and just enjoy seeing them.”

According to last year’s FWC manatee count, the species is showing the highest population they’ve seen in several years.

Sometimes when times are darkest, the best thing to see you through is a little song and dance, which is just what valley Realtor Paula Cotton discovered when her health took a sudden turn for the worse.

"Three years ago I was diagnosed with severe ulcerative colitis," Cotton said. "I was hospitalized four times, had two surgeries and pretty much couldn't work for all of 2007."

Cotton said that was a dark time.

"If we are not selling homes then we don't have any income coming in," she said. "I was scared, and… at the time I was a single mother, and wasn't sure how I was going to provide financially for my son."

Little did Paula know that when she was first diagnosed, the answer to her fears would be found in song, dance and a little comedy, all part of a variety show called "Staar Night."

Realtor and show co-director Lauri Dickman explained that "Staar Night" is the sole fundraiser for the Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors' Hutch fund.

"The Hutch fund goes to Realtor members or affiliate members who are faced with huge financial catastrophic events," Dickman said. Typically it is a medical situation."

The show's cast is made up of fellow Realtors, lenders, inspectors and others in the real estate business who come together to put on a show -- a show that co-director Barbara McBain says for the last four years has surprised audiences.

"I think they expect a talent show," McBain said. "What they don't expect is full production numbers and costumes and sets and real professional lighting. And we keep getting better and better every year."

Dickman said the show even surprises cast members.

"You don't know until you are up on the stage when it all comes together just how tremendous this event really is," she said. "We had 20 people in the cast the first year, we've raised over $200,000 in four years…and that all goes to the Hutch fund. We've given away $137,000 dollars."

That money goes to people like Laura Cotton.

"I can't tell you how important it was for me to have people that I didn't even know that helped -- helped to take care of me and my family that year," Cotton said.

She said she was so impressed that she decided to volunteer for Staar Night herself.

It was either on my birthday or at Christmas that I received as a child the book of poetry by Robert Louis Stevenson called, "A Child's Garden of Verses".

One of my favorite poems was called 'My Shadow' which my mother had memorized and so had I.

The book is long gone but today, I found the poem online - what a treat!

ORGINAL POST October 23, 2009Weather permitting, Linda fishes a couple of hours a day from her kayak and last week she caught two sailfish within four days!

As a result, she's being sponsord by the local Hobie dealer to be on their fishing team which includes free use of a top notch Hobie kayak for one year.

Mission accomplished - sailfish from my kayak!
I've been dying to get out in my kayak the last few days but conditions have been terrible. I got into a school of blackfin about 5 days ago and since then all I can think about is them and sailfish. So today after dropping my daughter off at school I headed out in the yak. After getting stung by a bee about an hour after being out there and not seeing much activity I was starting to have doubts that this was going to be a good day. Caught a few small hardtails and pulled them around I finally found a spot that looked like it had potential just a big smooth circle of water so I dropped my sabiki down and caught 2 big beautiful lys. Got one out and continued to catch some nice cigs, put a big cig on my other line, well not more than 5 min into it my drag starts screaming & I see a streak of blue shoot through the water - to dark to be a King... sure enough it was my sail. He ate the ly. He made several runs with lots of jumps, it was surreal being in a yak and experiencing this. I wasn't really that far from shore so I called Ernie & had him meet me at the end of our street to take a quick pic. He was released, tired but swam away strong.

ok....are you ready for round 2 of my sailfishing adventures? I headed out this morning in search of another sail. I brought a bag of ballyhoo in case I didn't find my Lys but right off the bat about 30 min into into my paddle I found to big LYs. So I let one go off the back and kept the other on my spinning reel close to my yak . Within minutes a sail comes right up to the close in bait and starts checking it out . I quickly grab the rod and start trying to get line out to let the Ly swim, then the sail turns away and 3 secs later my other rod starts screaming. So I quickly reel the first line in and just let it swim right next to my yak, I don't want this bait to die. So I grab the rod that's going off and I am not lying I think I was pulled at least 1 mile offshore. After about 30 or so min I get him close to the yak he is lit up and WAY bigger then the sail I got a few days ago. He starts tailwalking in front of me and I was so nervous he was going to jump right on top of me I quickly let some line out to get him away from me. And then.... I look out of the corner of my eye and I watch a mahi inhale the other ly that is literally inches from my yak and that rod starts screaming. Now I'm several miles offshore and I have a sailfish at my bow and a mahi peeling drag on my stern. The sailfish is done, so I get him yakside and quickly release him and off he goes. I was exhausted from the sail and then the mahi put up a good fight lots of jumps and finally got him gaffed and in the yak. That was the longest paddle back in fighting north winds but it was and epic day and believe I won't top today for a VERY long time!!!Wish I could have gotten better pics of the sail so you could see the size of him.
